Dirstarter vs Brilliant Directories comes down to one question: do you want to rent a finished directory platform or own the code behind your directory? Brilliant Directories is a hosted platform at $97/month with hosting, payments, email and support in one bill. Dirstarter is a Next.js boilerplate you buy once, deploy yourself and modify however you like.
My short answer: non-technical founders who want a working site this week should pick Brilliant Directories. Anyone who can handle a deploy (alone or with an AI coding assistant) and plans to run the directory for years should pick Dirstarter.
Bias disclosure: I built Dirstarter, so I sell the competing product. I also run OpenAlternative, a directory that makes about $6,500/month, and I wrote a separate Brilliant Directories review. This page skips the full tour and focuses on the head-to-head decision.
Pick Dirstarter if:
- You (or an AI coding assistant you trust) can deploy a Next.js app
- You want to own the code and move it to any host
- You plan to run more than one directory
- Organic search is your main growth channel and you want full control over SEO
Pick Brilliant Directories if:
- You never want to touch code, servers or deploys
- You want same-day support and weekly training webinars
- You need member management, email marketing and auto-generated location pages out of the box
Dirstarter vs Brilliant Directories at a glance
I verified the Brilliant Directories column against its pricing page in October 2026. The Dirstarter column comes from the docs.
| Feature | Dirstarter | Brilliant Directories |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | One-time payment, from $150 | $97/month, or $997 lifetime while the offer lasts |
| Hosting included | No, you host it (Vercel, Railway, your own server) | Yes, website and email hosting |
| Build without code | No | Yes |
| Full source code you can modify | Yes | Partial: source code access is listed, but the site runs on their platform |
| Paid and featured listings | Yes, Stripe tiers with subscriptions | Yes, paid memberships and featured upsells |
| Ad placements | Yes, via Revinel | Yes, banner ads |
| User accounts | Yes, Better Auth | Yes, up to 100,000 members |
| Email marketing | Partial: newsletter signups and marketing email | Yes, broadcasts and drip campaigns |
| Auto-generated location pages | No | Yes |
| AI content generation | Yes, listings generated from a scraped URL | Yes, AI pages, emails and SEO content |
| MCP servers for AI assistants | Yes | Not listed |
| Multi-language | Yes, next-intl | Not listed |
| Directories per purchase | Unlimited | One per plan |
| Support | Email, plus webinars and tutorials |
The table splits roughly in half. Brilliant Directories wins on everything a managed platform should win on: hosting, no-code setup, member tools and email. Dirstarter wins on ownership, flexibility and running more than one site.
Pricing compared
The two products charge in different ways, so a 3-year total is the fairest comparison.
Brilliant Directories has two plans on its pricing page: the Monthly Plan at $97/month and the Lifetime Website Plan at $997 one-time. Both include hosting, email support and 100,000 members. The page says lifetime plans are "going away this week," so treat the $997 option as a promotion that may disappear.
Dirstarter is a one-time payment from $150 (the Basic list price; Pro is $200, and the launch discount is on the pricing section). Hosting is your job. I use Vercel, and the free Hobby plan is for personal, non-commercial use only, so a directory that earns money needs Vercel Pro at $20/month. Pro allows unlimited projects on one seat. For the database, Neon's free plan gives you 1 GB per project, and its paid plan is pay-as-you-go with no monthly minimum. A small directory fits in the free tier.
Domains cost the same on both sides, so I left them out.
3-year cost for one directory
- Dirstarter: $150 + ($20 × 36 months) = $870
- Brilliant Directories, Monthly Plan: $97 × 36 months = $3,492
- Brilliant Directories, Lifetime plan: $997, if the offer is still live
3-year cost for three directories
- Dirstarter: $150 + ($20 × 36 months) = $870, because one license and one Vercel Pro seat cover all three
- Brilliant Directories, Monthly Plan: $97 × 3 sites × 36 months = $10,476
- Brilliant Directories, Lifetime plan: $997 × 3 = $2,991
Two honest caveats. Brilliant Directories advertises multi-site discounts, but the page doesn't show the numbers, so the three-site figures above are list prices. On the Dirstarter side, a directory with heavy traffic can push Vercel and Neon into usage charges, and you pay for your own time on updates. OpenAlternative takes me 2-3 hours a week to maintain, and most of that is content, not code.
Where Brilliant Directories is the better choice
You don't want to be technical at all. Brilliant Directories handles hosting, SSL, backups and updates. You log into an admin panel and manage listings. Dirstarter needs a deploy, environment variables and a database, and no amount of good docs changes that.
Support is part of the product. Brilliant Directories holds a 4.8/5 rating across 800+ reviews on Capterra, and support is the thing reviewers praise most. Weekly webinars and video tutorials come with the subscription. With Dirstarter you get email support from me, and then the code is yours to manage.
You're building a local or membership directory. Auto-generated location pages, member profiles, drip email campaigns and gated premium content all ship ready to use. Dirstarter's data model fits curated directories like tool listings, and adding location pages means writing code.
You want to test an idea with no setup. The free demo needs no credit card. You can build a rough version of your directory before paying anything.
Where Dirstarter is the better choice
You want to own the asset. A directory is a business you might sell one day. With Dirstarter, the code, the database and the hosting account are yours. With Brilliant Directories, the site lives on their platform as long as you pay, and the pricing has changed at least once since July 2026.
You plan to run more than one directory. This is where the math gets lopsided. One Dirstarter purchase covers unlimited directories. I run four directories built on it: OpenAlternative, EuroAlternative, DevSuite and TerminalDock.
Search is your growth channel. On OpenAlternative, about 65% of revenue comes from ads and sponsorships and about 35% from $197/month featured listings. All of it depends on thousands of listing pages ranking on Google. Owning the code means you control every URL, template, sitemap and piece of structured data. I wrote up the full story in the OpenAlternative case study.
You want a design nobody else has. Brilliant Directories themes are editable, but reviewers repeatedly ask for more modern designs. Dirstarter uses Tailwind CSS and Base UI components, so you can change any page.
You work with AI tools. Dirstarter runs two MCP servers: a public one that lets assistants like Claude and ChatGPT recommend your listings, and an admin one for managing the directory from an AI agent. The codebase is plain TypeScript, which AI coding assistants handle well.
Switching from Brilliant Directories to Dirstarter
Moving is a rebuild, but your data comes with you.
- Export your data. Brilliant Directories can export member data to CSV and export member categories separately. The pricing page also lists MySQL database access, which helps if a CSV export misses fields.
- Map the fields. Match each CSV column to a field in Dirstarter's Prisma schema. Add any custom fields your niche needs to the schema first.
- Import. Dirstarter's docs include a seed script example for importing from a CSV file. Run it against your production database, then spot-check a few dozen listings.
- Redirect old URLs. List every indexed URL on your old site and add 301 redirects in
next.config.tsto the matching new pages. This step protects your rankings, so don't skip it. - Recreate paying customers. Paid members on Brilliant Directories need new Stripe subscriptions in Dirstarter. Email them before the switch so nobody gets billed twice.
Keep the old site running until the new one is live and Google Search Console shows it crawling the redirects.
My verdict
For Dirstarter vs Brilliant Directories, my rule is simple. If you can't or won't touch code, Brilliant Directories is a solid managed platform with excellent support, and $97/month buys you hosting, payments and email in one bill. If you can handle a deploy and you're building a directory for the long term, Dirstarter costs less over three years, scales to several directories without extra fees and leaves you owning the whole thing.
I'm biased, so check both. Try the Brilliant Directories demo with your real categories, and read the Dirstarter docs to see what setup involves. If you're also weighing no-code builders or WordPress, I've compared Dirstarter vs Softr and Dirstarter vs WordPress directory plugins too.
